Why do development companies take a long time (about four months ) to create a Magento store?

Follow one of those youtube videos, configure the platform, add your modules and install the theme. Products can be added to the admin and while it is time-consuming, it's not difficult.

Once you have done that come back here and let us know if it truly took only two or three hours.

Sorry to sound snarky but there is a massive difference between setting up Magento to run an online store and setting up Magento to run a successful and scalable online store.

I am going to assume you want to set up a successful and scalable online store.

One of the first problems you will run into is theme/extension conflict. Assuming my point above, you won't use the default theme, you will buy a pre-made theme. Extensions you install after the theme won't always appear correctly on the frontend or backend. Depending on what extensions you use and how many you want to install, this can take quite a while.

Next problem will be adding products. There are a lot of questions to answer when structuring your catalogue:

  • Will I only be selling on my website or through other channels (eBay, Google product search, Amazon, etc...)?
  • What type of attributes are my customers looking for, do they want to search/filter/compare those attributes? Some people feel like their products are very simple and therefore won't require much thought in attribute setup. However, I would challenge that customers nowadays are searching for products in many different ways using myriads of keyword combinations. The more data you expose to them (and Google) about your products, the more likely they are to land on your site. This is the start of the successful part.
  • Simply analyzing your product catalogue and helping you set up an appropriate attribute structure is a big project in itself. This can be simplified and you can just put up a name/sku/image/description. But I am assuming you want to build a successful store.
  • Now that your products are in, the next issue will be speed. You may have tried to go cheap and setup Magento on a basic shared or virtual setup. As you browse the site it will feel like walking through a pile of jello. You can use a cheap shared or virtual setup but you will need a lot of caching to make things run faster. Or you can spend a monthly fortune on dedicated hardware. Do you know which is best for your future growth plans?
  • The biggest misconception people have about starting out in e-commerce is that it's easy. They have sold stuff on eBay, that was easy. Installing Magento seems easy enough and there are thousands of extensions that look easy.

The hard part is standing out.

Try building a large business on eBay. The difficult part is not creating a listing. The difficult part is standing out from the thousands of other sellers who offer the same thing you do for $0.01 less.

The hard part is figuring out what makes you different and then capitalizing on it.

To be blunt...

...if your plan is to buy some stuff on Alibaba, mark it up 5% (because you are going to be the low-cost alternative) and then ship it yourself as orders flow in, you have a very difficult and not very profitable road ahead.

With Magento, developers find it easier to add pages to the website, update content, and link pages to the sub or main navigation, therefore saving the significant amount of time.
